First of all happy New Year, I’m sure that many of you are considering what it is that you would like to achieve in 2017 and are wondering how to go about it.

This blog post is the result of a task I set myself over my Christmas holidays to go back over the great results of 2016 and put all my success stories into a neat format for publishing online. I was an hour into the process when it dawned on me that I was overlooking an important topic.

What’s this all about then?

I have already blogged about what it takes to see results in fitness (of which there will be more on this topic later in the year) but what I have not talked about is the failures.

The harsh reality…

Now some of you may think that this is far too brutal a term to use in this politically correct day and age but let’s be honest, if someone has handed over money, cleared time in their diary and set out goals then not achieved them then that’s a big F in my book.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and put a positive spin on failure…

 

Ok, so I’m going to spin failure now. My approach to the goals I don’t achieve is to look for the lessons.To take a personal example, I have set myself the goal of mastering the correct techniques for tennis. This has involved going back to basics and (regularly) slowly shadowing my shots in front of my coach. From there being hand fed a foam ball whilst aiming to hit a target attached to a wall (then fast forward a few months) until we are back to some of the more recognisable tennis drills. That’s the short version; I’ve skipped about 10 stages (no joke).

Have clear methods that work for you…

So why am I telling you this “fascinating” story. Well, it’s not to show you how bonkers I am about tennis, although some of you may draw that conclusion. It’s not fun, glamorous or cool to be seen hitting a foam ball while everyone around you is playing the full game however, I am showing myself and my coach that I am willing to pursue my goal, from whatever angle and by whatever means necessary, with patience and perseverance. I now know much more about the mechanics and techniques of the various strokes, so I step onto the court with increased confidence and have clear methods that work for me in order to achieve the desired results.

The bottom line…

If you wish to see your goals through, be prepared to see each ”failure” for what it is, a step on the path that will help you move closer to succeeding at your goals.

 

A few weeks on: Taking huge strides…

 

So this final part has been added a couple of weeks after I first drafted this blog post. In that time I had almost given up on tennis which is rather embarrassing given the words above… but hey I’m human AND surprise, surprise I learnt a huge lesson whilst riding this emotional rollercoaster:
